View Full Version : Cabin air filter alternative

So, while researching diff oils, I asked about the cost of the replacement OEM Cabin air filter: $32.95  wow!
I had already ordered some generic cabin filters from logical-source.com;
they are made by TYC, in Taiwan, and are claimed to be an exact replacement/fit for Toyota part # 88508-01010
The total, for three filters (3 x $3.62 = $10.86) plus shipping ($10.93) = $21.79.
This converted to Canadian $23.74 for a final tally, for THREE filters. No duty or "customs brokerage fee" was charged (they ship USPS, not UPS)
They arrived yesterday, so here are some pics:
The packaging (even comes with installation instructions)!

Here is the OEM on the left, and the new generic on the right:

Here they are edge on (OEM is made by Micron/Delphi)

I put the generic in tonight. It fit perfectly. I guess only time will tell if it works as well / as long as OEM. But even if OEM is better, is it four times as better (based on cost)? At this price, I can afford to change them frequently. :p

Hey nice work Geoff. Can't wait to see the comparison after you test it out. Thank you for the pictures cause I'm a visual type of guy.

Thanks for that Geoff. Having an '05, mine didn't come stock with the in-cabin filter though I added it after (despite much arguing from Heningers part department that I needed the whole filter assembly, etc...). Anyway, finally convinced them to order it for me and recently had to replace it for their exorbitant cost. Wish I had known about the ones you just posted as I'd much rather go about ordering them that way! $33/each is ridiculous!
Another option I've read on other boards is people fabricating their own out of furnace filters.

Yeah, I also read about using 3M furnace filters & carefully cutting them to size. I briefly considered it, but when I found these I said screw it, this is way easier. (& I doubt good quality furnace filters are cheap)
But you know, this kind of item is exactly the kind of thing a group buy would work for. The cost / ea. would be ridiculously cheap if you bought like 10 or 20, and we know the company is for real. Something to keep in mind . (Unfortunately, I won't be organizing it, as I'm good for a while  )

Holy Old Thread Batman!
Anyway, the time has come to start thinking about getting some more of these.
They are $3.62 US (so basically the same CAN). These fit 2006 + Tacomas.
I will be ordering in April. A lot of them, not just three, this time. This is a call for interest / group buy. Once they come in, I will sell them then as people want them & when I see you in Calgary or on runs. (straight at price I paid + shipping divided up into it. No mark up, - no funny business. I am NOT a vendor.). I'm not asking for any prepayments. I just ask that if you say you want 4, then buy 4, don't jack me around.
Dealership price is significantly higher (price it out for yourself), and then they charge you another $28.00 to put it in for you. This is SO a DIY kind of thing.
I've used all three of mine & they've worked flawlessly.
As a ball-park idea, if I order 30, with shipping via USPS that comes to $160.90 including shipping, or about $5.36 each, according to their web store. That doesn't account for US to CAN conversion, which is pretty negligible, or any duty (USPS doesn't burn you on that). On further digging, you can ship UPS, price drops to 128.72, but I've been burned by UPS before with their "Customs Brokerage Fee" (Min is $30.00). I'll have to email Logical Source & see if they can do anything about that.
Nathan / CT4WD Team, I'm not trying to be a vendor, so this doesn't violate the terms of CT4WD, right? If it does, let me know, and I'll just order my own :)

Just FYI too, you can extend the life of these things by carefully (Carefully!) washing them in the sink thus dropping the price even further technically. :)
I'd be in for 5 Filters.

Nice price. The dealer really gets ya on this replacement - so I buy the OEM Micron filter from Crappytire for $20.

Order placed tonight! :)
Geoff - 10 (in case anyone changes their mind & wants one)
Tacorossa - 5
Krazie Sj - 5
snorola -2
Total 22 filters. $79.64 before shipping & handling BS. Unfortunately they ship UPS, so we could see a customs brokerage fee. I'll update group when they arrive. (couple weeks)
In any any case, these are *way, way* cheaper than OEM at this price.
Thanks to all who joined in my first group buy.

OK everybody. The 22 filters have arrived! All undamaged. I Love USPS - NO duty or brokerage fee charged at all, somehow!! :D
So, it really is just 97.27 divided out by 22 = $4.42 each
Here is the Invoice for proof that I'm not making anything off this:

Max: I'll bring your four when I drop off your Stubbs Sliders after May 20th
To the rest: I'll have to come to Calgary anyway to pick up my part of the big Official group order, so we can work out when that is, or if you want it sooner, let me know & we can figure something out. Maybe I should actually show up at a meeting or something LOL

Sergio: your location works well for me being that I'm in Red Deer. I may drop yours off sooner, as I get to the City pretty often. I'll PM you beforehand 'cause I know what shift work is like

Just saw this thread for the first time and if you have any extras, I'd take 2-5 of them. If not, count me in for 5 if you decide to order more of them. Cheers. ...Steve

Hey Steve O
I didn't forget about your post - but It's looking like most if not all will be snatched up by others. I'll keep you in mind if someone doesn't take theirs, Ok?

I installed a cabin air filter on my car. When I went to install it, the filter in fit the housing that was already on the car. Does anyone know where to get a replacement filter without the housing?

I'm sorry, I'm not following you / your post
What exactly are you asking? Is this about a 2nd Gen Tacoma? or another vehicle? If another vehicle, we'll need make/model info
If it's for Tacoma, only the 2005 year didn't come with cabin air filters. But you can still put them in there ;) in all 2nd gens, all you are changing is the filter element that is in my pic - it just slides straight out (towards you).

I'd just like to make a public apology to Geoff for being a retard. I thought yesterday was Tuesday and had everything set up to do the trade for the air filters, and I was really confused when he didn't stop by...on the wrong day.
So yeah...I'm dumb. Sorry Geoff. :(
And I apologize cause I'm fairly certain you might drop a nut trying to climb over my sofa's to get to the BBQ.
