Ok, no 4x4 board is complete without a thread of our 'mans best friends'...

I won't do the purebred myself - I like my mutley crew of rescues...

This is our puppy - Pyrenees x (collie/lab) Peppers her name for obvious reasons...

Cody's our cranky old dog... German shepard x prairie dog we like to say (definitely has the GSD in him - what the heck he's crossed with - nobody knows) a whopping 20lbs full grown. He was caught as a feral dog on the conklin reserve during the fires in the fall of '03. Have yet to meet someone who doesn't love the cody after meeting him.

This is a horrible thread... c'mon really?

I've been holding off for a really long time from getting a dog because of my work sched. and travel!.... This is really not helping.... keep me mature and making good decisions...haha

The two dogs I'm looking at getting:
Shiba Inu Red/White
or
Husky

These two do well in the cold and have the ability to ski tour.... i hope!

No more cute cuddly puppy dog photos..... no more!... ;)

Andyl

Shiba Inu... Oh my... Do your research :D A friend has one... Holy terror - their sheltie was an amazing animal; never met a better trained dog... That shiba - Geeeze, I've almost gotten to the point of saying "beatings are a necessary part of it's training"...

Ok no more cute cuddly fuzzballs...

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i277/cgyreefer/DSCF4492.jpg
(pepper the day we got her (3months) - if you ever hear us call her 'big fatty' - this is why... She'd get big n fat like this - then grow 6" vertically overnight... Then she'd get big n fat... Then grow 6" vertically)

freeze

It's all in the training.... :D

Andyl
10-19-2009, 10:14 PM
I used to think that :) There are certain breeds however - that are MUCH harder to train... Cody was easy once we got the pecking order straightened out (took a long time) - very food driven... Pepper - she just wants love; pat on the head and she'll do anything for ya...

That shiba - owned by a dog family (like I said - their sheltie was amazingly well trained), and she keeps them on their toes 24/7/365 - never lets up on trying to prove she's actually the boss of the family...

So, speaking of dogs trying to show who's boss (& who is NOT supposed to be on beds - look at the grin), this is the dog that my screen name is inspired by:

And some fish:

If you ski like you drive ... you probably need a rescue dog.

Nothing wrong with a Saint Bernard :) Love those dogs, we missed (by minutes) getting a S.B. puppy from the pound before getting pepper...

May not be too bad of a thought really if you're spending a lot of time in the back country; seem to recall there was a local place that did offer specialized SAR training for avalanche dogs...

But you'd definitely need to upgrade the vacuum :D Our Pyrenees x that's ~lab sized is bad enough - she's killed off a couple vacuums on us now... I couldn't imagine trying to keep up with a SB spring and fall!

We're gonna have to have a meet where we all bring our dogs!!!
My dogs have been known to frequent the Ship n Anchor's patio during the summer :D Perhaps a meet at the bowness or southland dog park?

LOL Shiba eh? I got one..!! (Got a Shiba and a Shetland Sheepdog)

Shiba's are def a handfull. Had dogs all my life but the Shiba def takes some work, If you do get one I have some reccomendations for ya.

-Get a female - thay are way less dominant then the males
-Puppy training -
-Socialize them early and very often

They are super loyal dogs - but it does take allot of work to make them realize they are not the pack leader. We still have some issues with ours. With the people he knows he is very loving - with new people or even new animals - not soo much.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/canuckbuzz/IMG_1450.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/canuckbuzz/PA020231.jpg

He's 8 now but I do have to admit he has calmed down allot over the last yr. Still her sometimes makes it tough to take him places or have people over.

Well .. I've never had my pooches out to any events/meets yet so I guess I should introduce our family of rescued furry kids.

Here's Buddy .. he's a Border Collie/Lab cross and all 85 lbs of him is ga-ga about kids and other dogs:

http://www.intveldimages.com/Pets/Sentient-Beings/2006-09-02IMGP0591bwrb/620127398_pkbvP-XL-2.jpg

.. and here's Ginger. She's a Red Heeler mix we rescued from the Gleichen Reserve. She had a really rough start in life and no amount of training will socialize her with other dogs ..we've tried.

Love this thread - keep'em coming.

Meet our boys - Dexx and Gunner.

Dexx is 4ish I suppose, we think a type of English Shepherd. His owners asked me to take him about 3 years ago, they didn't understand animal nature or how to set boundaries, so when he grew big they lost control - to make a long story short I was the last call before euthanasia. Today I'm so proud of my boy, he's calm, obedient, trusting and trustworthy. He's a free spirit just like me, it's a perfect fit! He's come a long way and an absolute gem - I super-love my Dexx!

Gunner is 5ish and an Australian Kelpie. He's a typical herding dog, he'll herd cats, babies, water bottles, whatever you need watched - he's on it! Still fine-tuning his dog to dog social skills, but when it comes to humans he's a suck like no other. His addiction: fetch! You humans have been warned - if you throw that stick or ball you'll be under his spell for life. Gunner is a great trail dog - loves to run with the group, will take the lead, and never leave a man behind.

Dog training and rescue is a passion of mine - I'm always looking for a new challenge, experience, or opportunity. My dream is to one day open a dog training, rehabilitation and rehome centre (or at least that's my justification to purchase an acreage) - but in the meantime I'm always open to coaching or boarding new dogs. PM me if you're interested.

And the troublemaker, the escape artist, the one that costs me many hundreds of dollars in fines... Mika

yep - that look on her face sure gives away her mischievious personality :)

But who could resist those eyes. They look so innocent and sweet. No way they could cause trouble, hehe. Cleo is a beauty as well.

I have a miniature Siberian husky that gives me the same look, then I just know to look for what she has done wrong. Luckily the damage is normally miniature as well though. The mischievous nature is definitely a husky trait. We had to work VERY VERY hard to get her to have about 50% recall when told to come, and others with Husky's are normally surprised with the response of my dog. They are great once they know who is pack leader.

No kids yet though, thank goodness...

Yeah, wanderlust, prey drive, and poor recall are ongoing issues. Otherwise she's great. She chews a bit, but hasn't cost me much on that front, it's the dog at large fines that are so brutal..

Establishing myself as clear pack leader took a bit too, but as you say, once that's done everything else improves substantially.

Mika is also a little small for a sibe, but I don't think it's a result of thyroid disorder, I think she was just the runt of the litter.

Yeah we call Shila the super runt. Bit of an oxymoron I know. I am excited for a day when Mika and Shila might meet...

The other dog looks a lot like Kodi did when he was younger...of course he's an old greybeard now, but Ratpuke's dog Prado looks a lot like this I believe. (Same parents, just 2? litters apart.....)

That's Hattrick, he's a sweetheart with boundless energy. He lives in Cochrane now so we don't get to see him as often as we used to.
