I feel like bragging a bit :D Been doing a few more garage doors of late, as I'm learning door companies (including the one I work for) are great at doing standard installs... But ya go a little outside the box - and they start falling apart quickly...

Here's a 16x8, running about 14" of highlift; and following the 3/12 pitch of the underside of the scissor trusses...

That little box on the right is a lovely little Liftmaster 3800 jackshaft operator; Awesome little unit if your ever upgrading and have 'standard' torsion springs (not the wayne dalton/raynor/clopay enclosed springs) .

Yesterday's project - turned down by every door company in the city... They wont run it through a shelf (albeit, damn good reason... Boy do I hurt today having crawled around on the darn thing all day). Owner was prepping to have his second hoist installed - was not to thrilled about having the door hit his camaro :D Can't imagine why - now he can put his classic cadillac up on the new hoist without risking the chrome...

Bit of a goof on this one - figured 4' up and 4' back would get a 7' door clear of the doorway - came up a few inches shy... Guess I'm going back to school for a geometry lesson...

Nice garage... very impressive. I like that LiftMaster 3800 unit. Never seen one before...

You work for a door company? Interesting as my father-in-law is in need...

Can I PM you as we need to source a garage door (18'x8') and a man door (just standard size I think) and find an installer... A guy whom I thought was a friend was going to do it, but his prices keep increasing to the point that I think he's just guessing rather than giving us an educated quote based on what we require. Maybe he'd need a Liftmaster too =)

The hook is that he currently has a 9' door and an 8' door (both 8' tall) with structure between (1') supported on concrete. I need to get a 19' beam (microlam or steel I guess??)... Thoughts? Or anybody else a framer that could help us? He'll pay of course, but we want to know it's being done right and aren't getting hosed. Both of us are willing to "wrench" as well, particularly me.

A trade-off is that it's a huge garage (can't remember if it's 24x28 or 24x32) and it's heated. I'm sure he'd be more than willing or happy to lend it out if needed.... Just a thought. =) He's located in Black Diamond (on our way to MacLean almost!).

Cheers,

Jeremy

Not my garages - I can dream of them... Second thought - no... Goodon/DbarD will be doing me a nice 60x100 when i'm rich and famous :D

Sure - pm away... Get some pictures and dimensions... But I don't deal with man doors :D Could probably figure out how to install one if push came to shove. :D

Framing - we'd have to look at it... Not a framer - but I did sleep at a holiday inn express last night :D (Take that as I could toss it at some friends in construction for advice).

Should say - I do usually stay away from the garden variety installs; probably 100 guys I know who could do a decent job faster... I like to play with the funky stuff that makes those guys (and usually the office staff) go crosseyed...

specs of that operator are at http://www.liftmaster.com/consumerweb/pages/productmodeldetail.aspx?modelId=834 sometimes overkill - but on these types of doors - one of the two options (I like the zap better myself, but I'm gaining an appreciation for this one; and it's quite a bit cheaper)

Just in case anyone's looking :D Going to have to be whoring myself out doing garage doors & repairs nights/weekends for the next couple months (got the final bill for some dental work, ridiculous... And I still have to go back to complete the other half).

Hey Andyl,

I'm quasi-considering putting in a lift (a portable type one) but I'll need to modify my garage door track to accomodate it.
I also have a bonus room above the garage.

I'll like you to come by & have a look & see if it's even feasible.
Are you open to that?
