It just started but I'm puzzled. I going to set up the gopro cam to see where it's coming from. Looks like it's a slow drip from the upper hose but no hole and the clamps are tight. I'm wondering if my water pump is going and letting out some coolant.

Any thoughts on the 22r?

So i renamed the post. The leak has stopped temporarily but recently oil is slipping past the rings. I'm not up for rebuilding this one so I'm looking at changing to a 22re or a VW 1.9TDI. I'm going with swaps that'll allow me to keep the HD transmission Marlin built. I'm going to run the current 22r till it's near dead so she'll make it out to the two McLean runs at least.

HG... It's weeping from between the head and block. Gonna keep the 81 at home till I do more tests (compression&coolant) and if compression checks clean then I'm gonna replace the HG. Can't have coolant dripping on the trail.

How big of a job is it to do the VW swap?

I'll need to have some engine mounts fabbed. Other than that there's a company called Acme Adapters that makes an adapter for the tranny and brackets for pumps and other stuff that makes it somewhat bolt in.

I'd say it would be a winter project for sure.

Well the HG is good!.. so the mysterious puff of white smoke is still a mystery. I did have to replace my timing chain gasket and oil pan gasket cause I was dripping a little oil.

It could be the exhaust gas not getting hot enough to burn off the condensation quick enough before leaving the exhaust system.

Once the truck fully heats up on the highway for a while .... no white smoke.

It's a strange situation but at least I won't be leaking oil on the trail.

haha.... i had my post over there and I was told I should check my muffler bearings.... I already replaced those a couple months ago!!

So far with the warmer temps outside, white puff is pretty minimal to almost non existent. I'm gonna presume muffler bearings again :D

Yeah those muffler bearings are a bitch :)

If ya do go the VW TD route; got a spare adapter here or two if you wanna save 250$ by doing a little yerself (cut to shape, holes predrilled, just need to be bored to correct size & those two top ones countersunk) saves ya 250$+shipping over the acme :)

Andyl you're awesome! I would love that. Looks like the 22r is gonna keep tickin' for a while, they just don't die....yet!

Will you be at the National 4WD open house?

Hah, I thought so too... Then my 22re ate it's #3 rings... then the headgasket... patched that up - then the damn bottom end started knocking like mad... Thus my swap project began.

Nah, I'll be hopefully busy wrenching rather than talking about wheeling...

When's your project almost put together to get out on the trail?

Well... No... If I won the lottery, there would be one of those fancy Mog chassis'd expedition trucks in my stable :) But I'd have to be towing the 4runner :D

Seriously - 100$, got 3, need one. After shipping & layout etc - was better to buy 3 than one...
