I recently had my FJ in for it's 36,000 km maintenance service. When I went to pick up my truck the guy at the service counter mentioned that they had booked me in the following week to reseal my timing chain case because they had noticed some seepage. I was told they would need my truck for 2 days since it was a labor intensive job. I agreed and the following week it was in for the repair (free of charge of course).

So fast forward 3 weeks and here we are now. I've noticed that when starting my FJ after it has sat for a period of time and with the recent lower temperatures it makes a whining sound coming from the engine bay. The noise is hard to explain but if I could compare it to anything it would be a radio controlled engine, you know the noise they make when they're turning massive RPM's. The noise dissipates after about 20 seconds but regardless it's a noise that wasn't there before the repair.

I've posted this here just to hear your opinions or suggestions before I call my dealer. I'm sure they will ask me to bring the truck in and show them what I mean but like I said before the truck has to sit for awhile. We all know what they will say after I take it in. "Customer complaint about noise could not be reproduced"

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like serpentine belt to me. After only 36000km i am surprised to think it would be making noise already.

Perhaps somebody more knowledgeable will have something more helpful to add haha :)

what about the fan clutch? Does the noise coincide with activation/deactivation of the rad fan?

lol shooting in the dark here

I guess my final comment would be frozen/sludgy lines, power steering maybe? My old highlander's PS pump would squawk and if really cold squeal for a few seconds at startup. I am talking -20 or below usually.

Nothing I can think of seems related in any way to your timing chain case repair, for sure.

+1 for power steering but hard to tell unless we have a look or hear.

There's that other weak spot in the serpentine that likes to pop up... Idler pulley; for some reason they do seem to like to start making noise once things get cold...

I suppose it could be either or, or maybe something else. This will be my 4th winter with the FJ and i've never heard anything remotely similar. I'll give them a call tomorrow morning and see what they say.

Cheers

If anyone was curious the diagnosis is in! Apparently my water pump is causing the noise and Toyota has ordered me a new one. She goes in on Monday for a replacement.

Nice work! Glad you were able to get a replacement and I wasn't super serious.
