Remind me never to rent a Uhaul on the first snowstorm of the year ever again - automagic hydraulic brakes while sliding off the side of stoney = no fun at all...
Picked up the DW's new DD - 90 4runner 22RE / A340 (yes 4wd) - AC, Sunroof, all the bells and whistles. Nice new stereo with mp3 plugin too...

Some bodywork required, at the very least got a good engine :) And I've paid more for just an engine come to think of it...

If the brakes worked properly at all you were doing good ...
A friend of mine worked at U-Haul and ended up being a whistle-blower. W-5 did a show about how terrible they are (Click Here (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20051021/wfive_uhaul_051021?s_name=&no_ads=)). I've switched to Budget when I need to move bigger things. However, I don't know if they are any better and they are a little more expensive. On the plus side; W-5 has never done an expose on them, most of their trucks are diesel and the big one - AIR MILES.
On the runner side ... nice DD rig. Should do winter alright. Any plans to fix 'er up any?

Yeah UHaul sucks - electric brakes would have been much preferable. Can't wait till I find a car hauler of my own for cheap :) Saw the W5 - but it didn't scare me enough to avoid them for these little projects... There's only so many problems a trailer can have luckily... More of a hydraulic brake + greasy stoney trail (and bald tires on the work truck I was towing it with) making life difficult...
She's got some fixes coming for sure - gotta deal with her couple mechanical issue; brakes, charging, and the darn tailgate... Minimal crawling around last night - I found her oddity... Found 15 years of heninger toyota receipts for maintenance, everything appears to have been done by them oil changes to engine overhauls... 340,000kms Can't find a single part that isn't factory toyota other than the head unit - and I think heninger used a local sourced tailpipe rather than a OEM toyota one a couple years back when they replaced it (the muffler and front pipes are toyota though).
Will clean her up, hopefully have all the mechanical issues + those damn rusted out running boards removed this weekend... Then we'll look at making her look respectable again...

Very well may take you up on that offer :) Are your hands smaller than mine? Cuz I seem to recall the alternator was farmed out to a mechanic on my 88 cuz I couldn't get my big mitts in there :)

Well, got out and did a little wrenching - nice part about the flu.. sometimes when you're cooking hot - a bit of time out in the cold feels good...
Thinking the previous owner got discouraged and sold stupid cheap due to a crooked mechanic... "Bad tires" that I was wondering about why he said desperately needed tires - lots of tread left... A little dry rot - probably 3-4 years old, seen (and run) much worse... Brake issue - Can't find where the fluid went, but it's level is sucking air low and nasty... Pads all have over 1/2" of material left... No sign of leaks from any of the brake lines - quickly chased em - nothing obvious.
I was wrong - not sold by heninger - found the original bill of sale (complete with receipt - guess they paid cash); charlesglen, looks like it was serviced there for most of the first decade... Including all those little warranty repairs...
Its kinda funny to work on this truck - lots of bits and pieces I've never seen on other vehicles - geeze there's a lot of heatshields... Still in place and intact...
Looks a lot better without the rotted/falling off running boards; and SR5 rims - Gotta chase down some of the SR5 black plastic center caps, they fit over the auto hubs quite nicely - and make things look much better.

*grumbles* Well, fighting with the tailgate window this morning... Motors good, electrics are good...
Problem seems to be - nobody's used it in 10+ years... Motor binds/stalls due to tracks being filled full of crud (y'know that bottom lip - it feels like a bottom roll... )
Andyl

Charging issue... Key broken off in tailgate + rotate to up position = battery drain...
Brake issue... Fill & bleed...
Tailgate - fully and completely rotted out... Lower window channels rotted - but just enough left to patch up for now...
Best damn 350$ i've ever spent :D

Brake issue... Little more than fill and bleed - damnit got low again on me... What's that drip over by the gas tank...
:(
Time for the real fun to start...

If you have a brake fluid leak on the right rear have a look above the coil spring top mount. I had a brake line blow in that area (during a panic stop) and discovered theres a spot up there that traps dirt and moisture which rust outs the line. I climb under my rig or raise it on the hoist and flush that spot out regularly now.
Andyl

Saw that spot mines actually coming from somewhere above the gas tank, running down the side and off the rear lip...
Pondering whether I rerun in the original location - or do as others have and run outside the passenger side framerail...

Got all the parts, got all the pieces to replace that rear line from front to rear...
Think I can get the gastank down? :)
What's the trick? How the heck do you disconnect the lines from the tank so you can drop the darn thing? The Toyota factory manual is really helpful on this one... "Step 1 - Drop tank" - they must have learned from Chevy on that manual :) It only comes down about 1/2-1" before the connections prevent further movement; not enough to be able to reach in and disconnect things...

Zoiks! FYI - dropping the gas tank to redo the line = You're going to invent new swears! :)
Suddenly thinking about splicing from about the transfercase back rather than redoing all the way to the MC... Had a quick eyeball at the lines going up behind the engine and realized the world of hurt I'd be in going all new front to back :D
That and I can't find one of my dozen or so 12mm wrenches, thus I can't get the dang clip off the crossmember :D

Sorry no space in the garage for spectators :) but you're welcome to come n git dirty :D
Actually no space in the garage for 2 4runners come to think of it - they're shoehorned in there, but... Lets just say working on this one isn't pleasant :D

I hate it; I just bought 3 more of them this summer - due to the same scenario... And they've all walked away... I'm starting to think there's a wrench gremlin hiding around here :)
Got the brake lines repaired and bled... Grrr! now I've gotta put it all back together - not looking forward to getting those fill hoses back on again; it was bad enough getting them off Getting them back on - well - should be good for a few new curse words :)

Have I mentioned how much I love toyota...
Truck's on the road, still a bit of work to go; and i'd still like to get that idle down a little farther (was running 1500, got her down to ~1000rpm - but seem to be out of adjustment?!?)
Pulled apart the power window switchblock to deal with the drivers window that doesn't work... Man, now that's a well built/designed unit... yeah the 3 switches for the passenger doors are pretty weak... But - the setup of the drivers window switch; basically setup like a manually operated relay.
We wont discuss all the melty pieces... But she's back up and running :) Don't think the PO ever used the drivers window - motor looks new, window track looks new, rollers look new... No wear anywhere to be found on the system (which does beg the question why there's melty parts in the switch???)

high idle could be from your tps or cold switch stay on

Just reading thru here and though it's too late the fuel tank lines can be accessed thru a plate under the rear passengers seat on the right side.
Andyl
11-11-2009, 11:21 AM
Yeah, checked adjusted all - cold start runs at about 1800rpm, kicks out properly - it's regular idle is just high; probably need to look at the o-ring under the idle screw... But that can be another day project :)
Tarzan - that access plate only accesses the high pressure feed line's connection in the 90's I was rather dissapointed to find; pretty sure on my 87 it pretty much accessed everything on-top.

Ok I'm confused. I thought you were working on the 4Runner posted in the picture and described as the new daily driver which looks like a 90's Runner.

it's a 1990... but yeah - only thing you can get at through that hatch under the seat is the hard line from the gas tank :)
