Ok, so the new beater will be coming home thursday... (90 4runner 22re/a340)

Of course it's got the typical gen2 rust - um... What rear wheel wells? :D

Need a way to make them look semi respectable - and much less "religious". Little too far up on this truck to just do the bushwackers and call it good...

Any thoughts - tempting to do the crummy expanding foam and fiberglass to patch things - but that just makes it worse in the end; any other suggestions? Saw toyota fiberglass sells rear wheel well patch panels...

Or know any bodymen work for toyota parts? :)

I would just cut out all the rust, and make your own patch panels out of aluminum and rivet them on.. it will look badass ;)

Um, Yeah, I'll pass on that... I'd do real steel if I wanted to go to that level, but I'm useless with a mig (arc - wizard, mig... useless - I must be a control freak or something).

Somewhat surprised, not having a good time finding replacement panels for the wheel wells... toyota fiberglass seems to be one of the few who sells them...

Also contact Mike Hildebrand in Coalhurst @ 4XToys

He'll have replacements and in pretty good shape too. He used to come up for deliveries at no extra charge but I don't know if he still does that anymore.

I got my two doors, hood, grill, emblems, and fender for the 81 from him and they were in awesome shape and the price was really good.

I've looked in the states for replacements and you can find remakes for really cheap but they just won't ship here at a decent price. A new hood was $100 and shipping would be $300...eek.

Try Mike.. he's a good guy

Another option is PM S/C '03 taco (Chris F). His father is an AMVIC inspector and body guy, he may take a look and let you know what the best route may be.

Antonio - that's the one I was looking for... Damn these retailers need to improve their google results :)

Anyone ever used their patch panels before?

Yeah, patching in old metal to old metal seems bad to me though... And yeah - did some google'ing of wolf - they don't have a particularly good rep with any of the car communities (ie Z cars, BMW 2002's, alfa romeos...).

I've got the fibreglass quarters on my 85 that I rolled this spring... Awesome awesome product.
My adhesive only popped in 2 spotts. All I have to do for the repair is straighten the metal that was holding the fibreglass, prep, glue then press and whamo back to mint condition.
I acutally sent the pics of the wreck to Chris at toyotafibreglass ( I think I may have been his first actual full blown roll over) to let him know what a great product he sells.

If you're going to end up keeping any of these yotes, fibreglass is the way to go in my opinion. I'm going to end up ordering the fenders from him too when I get it back on the road.
Good luck with the runner

Touched base with toyotafiberglass - even though I have issues with his guerilla marketing - 5k is his minimum for a group order/discount... But making those fiberglass parts match is somewhat worrysome to me...

Anyone got an english wheel? :D

my 4runner had the infamous wheel well rot when I bought it 7 years ago. I went through the same thing. None of the patch panels will cover the rust. I had to cut out amost 4" of rust to get it all which was just below the fuel door. The patch panels at most usually cover 2" if you are lucky. If my memory serves me right, what I did was bought a set of front fenders (jobbers for like $80 each, and cut about 1" higher than the top of the flare all along and included a couple inches of the bodyline right at the cab. I then took the cut portion and set it in place at the rear wheel well. The wheel wells and body lines are the same at the rear as the front fenders. I trimmed the excess off where i didnt need it. Than I used panel epoxy and pop rivits to attach the new patch panel in place then I bondo'ed and kittyhair fibreglassed to blend it into the reast of the body.On the backside from the cab I took kittyhair fibreglass and fibreglassed the patch on the interior to seal it up as far as i could reach. ALong the wheel well lip i used body sealer and pop rivits to attach the panel to the fender.

I also took my old front fenders and cut the top 25" of them off from the front lights back. I took these and flipped them around and welded, fibreglassed and pop rivited them in at my rear corners. It hid the ugly mounts that the stock bumper used and left me with some nice rear corners.

It has been about 4 years and so far no problems. This was also my first attempt at bodywork.
