I hate being the guy that starts a thread like this but..
Old man winter is coming, what do you guys run if your rigs are daily driven? Winter tires? All terrains? All seasons?
I scored some winter tires on rims, 225 70R15, my god it's going to look horrendous! Haha! But hey, it's going to get better mileage in the city though but not so much on highway.

I have all seasons on right now, but I'm switching to All Terrains. It might look at little dorky with those shopping cart tires on there, but less dorky than smacking into a wall or other vehicle.

I was gonna start a new thread but I might as well bring it up here since it's related. Winter tires are on my mind too!
I just popped by Kal Tire and they quoted me $139 per tire for Tire & Battery Arctic Claws in 265/70R16. That's practically $100 per tire less than X-Ices go for.
http://www.tbcprivatebrands.com/sigma/viewline.asp?id=247
For that price I'm severely tempted, but I've never even heard of these before. Any thoughts?

Hey no worries Victor!
I run my MT's through the whole year only because I end up driving in almost waist deep snow in the winter time. The MTZ's handled the best out of the tires I've used in the winter and on ice. Actually like them better than the Pirelli Sottozero ice tires on wet warm ice. Colder dry ice the Sottozero's were better.

My all Terrains are getting down so this winter I will be putting on a set of 305/75R16 BFG Mud Terrains. Run at the right tire pressure and know how your vehicle reacts and you will be fine. This is my first set of All Terrains every other tire I have ever owned was a mud Tire. I never had an issue with them on ice or snow. But I don't run around on hockey puck tire pressure either.

I am buying new tires this winter, probably another set of Yokohama Geolandar as they are always rated top 3 in every review (and I don't like the bilzzaks). Otherwise I'll run Nokians

Unless they've changed their compound... if it's still the same tire then it is pretty old school tire and are prone to chunking.

Go with the A/T's man, at least with the A/T's they'll have a better chance at biting into the packed snow-ice. M/T's are good for loose snow, but the packed stuff and ice are your main worries.

I am seriously considering running a dedicated snow tire this year. I had Nokians on my Tundra and they were awsome in the snow. Just remember all the snow last year, really seems like a good idea....
Another option is the GoodYear Ultratrac. Awsome looking and designated as a snow tire. Nice sipes and ready to accept studs.

my fiancee has run a set of geolandars in probably a 235/245 treadwidth on an explorer the last two winters, she speaks very highly of them. I never drove her vehicle that extensively so I can't comment myself.
Personally, I have been running X-Ices every winter for a number of years. I was very pleased with my last set, no noticeable decline in traction over three seasons worth of use.
I have been a michelin guy for a long long time, and I'm on the verge of picking up a set of X-Ice for the taco, but am trying to investigate other options. Studded Hakkapeliittas sure look great, 'Rossa speaks highly of them.
All these tire choices are overwhelming.
For anybody shopping around for tires, 1010tires.ca is offering free UPS ground shipping currently, and is showing promos on their twitter page occasionally.
Yokohama has an MIR of sorts on right now, you can apply for a $50 "gift card" with the purchase of 4 tires (geolandar IT go72 included).
Michelin has a promo coming up in less than two weeks, michelinpromo.ca. MIR.

Last winter I ran on Bridgestone Dueler M/T's and they were OK, but the M/T's have big lugs and lack siping so a tiny skiff of snow on top of ice can be deadly. And those were on my open-diff '92 4runner.
This winter I'll be running BFG All-Terrain KO on my '05 4runner. Im looking forward to testing out the a-trac system ;)

I'm gearing up for winter number 2 on my Nokian Hakk Suv 5 studded tires. I got the 265/70/17 for my stock tires. I have been very impressed with their performance.
One thing to consider with studded tires is that they don't tend to wear as fast as unstudded tires.
The Nokian's come studded from the factory, so they are much quieter than normal studded tires that you get done at Crappy Tire etc.

Unfortunately you can only get nokians locally in Kaltire. and if your truck got a TPMS sensor they won't install it for you unless you put it on your OEM rims or buy seperate sensors for an aftermarket rim. which sucks if you wanna keep your oem and just buy a steel rim for winter.

Last year, I drove around with my 225 Toyo ATs. They're not a bad tread design, siped and all, and I felt pretty confident on them but they definitely never handled as well as the X-Ice tires I had in previous years on my Supra.
I've heard good things about Interco's trxus MTs, but they definitely not cheap. Last I checked, about $250 per tire at kal tire, and any place online.

Anyone actually try to order tires from Canadian Tire?
IT"S A NIGHTMARE!!!
I'm trying to get some 33x12.5R15 BFG All Terrain T/A KO's. I can't seem to find any store to help me. They have them on their website, in their store and they are advertized everywhere. They even have TIRE in their name, yet Canadian Tire still can't help me order tires. I've called 4 locations so far. I've been to two, one numerous times.
I've been run around, hung up on, re-directed, told to come back and flat out told "No" (which I still don't know why).
I'm starting to lose it.

I was shopping for tires today and at 2 shops the sales guy said the BF AT's have lost there Severe Snow rating and would be illegal if you go through a road block in the mountains checking for tires and chains... not sure if this is just BC .. any experience with this. Does carrying chains make it ok ?

Kal tire said the same thing to me. Apparently the older version was snow rated. Something about grandfathering from michelin. Ended up getting wrangler silent armor tires. No real opinion of these as I only have 200km on the truck...hope they work in the snow.

Kal-tire seems to like to change their prices ALOT.
I've called 3 times over the course of the summer about the BFG KM2's. It first started at $225 a tire then $240 and now it's $265. Seriously?
I called fountain tire asking about the MT/R w/ kevlar and the Duratrac.
The MT/R was more expensive than canadian tire. The Duratrac was cheap. Anyone tried out the new Wrangler Duratrac?

Just like Tacorossa, I run the studded Nokian Hakks for the wintery months.
I'm interested in the comment about Kal Tyre saying they won't install tires on non-TPMS rims, if your vehicle has TPMS sensors. Is this new?
I ask, because just 2 months ago, when I bought my Nittos, the Kal guy & I were discussing plans to spend (more) of my money. He was suggesting I get a set of black steelies for my Hakks. He didn't seem too fetched up about the fact that they would not have TPMS. In fact, we discussed some tricks, like putting all of them (the TPMS) in a sealed PVC pipe inflated to the correct pressure & tossing said pipe in back of truck *cough* not legal of course.
I do plan to get another set of rims for winter, because swapping tires onto the stock rims 2 X year is too damn expen$ive. I don't care about TPMS - I check pressure anyway every gas fillup. If I do the LED Gauge mod, that lite is going away forever anyway. So if Kal won't do it, who will? Can't you just buy rims & have tires mounted on them (just the rims), then take said rims home & put them on truck yourself?

I heard the same from my friend who bought a set of winter wheels and tires last year for his newer *cough* Pontiac Vibe *cough cough*. He was told that it is a new federal requirement for all vehicles newer than 2007 or 2008? First I heard of it. I think it was a load of BS. But then again, you never know. Maybe Canada is mandating that all new vehicles are required to have TPMS? Is anyone familiar with this?

there is a way to turn on/off the TPMS light on the 06 models only. I did this and it worked like a charm. Just follow this writeup (http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/showthread.php?t=170576), it's easy.

Not the first time either... GM owned a decent chunk of Toyota USA to block Toyota from making full sized trucks when they opened shop in North America. So they traded some car models through the years. Now that GM's ownership terminated a few years ago the Tundra is finally getting into the full size game.
