Hey folks,

The CARA (Calgary Amateur Radio Association) will be starting up a basic ham radio course in October. Their website also states starting in mid September so I've email them requesting clarification-September or October.

Of course you can do self directed study, but for some taking the course gives you some structure and you can write the exam at the end as opposed to going downtown or to a instructors residence to write if you are doing self study.

Cheers all!

Etienne,

The course may not fit into your time line. I think it's an 8 week course. (Don't qoute me).

If you have a schedule that affords you a couple of hours in the evenings, then I'd suggest hitting the exam generator over and over, and over, and over, and over. It takes about 20 minutes to go through it each time.

You might find your initial score results a little under the required.70% pass, but I assure you if you repeat the exam generator over and over, your results will very shortly offer you the confidence to write the exam.

At this point, it's pure memorization, and if you're prudent about your study schedule you will do just fine.

Are you coming to the meeting Wed? I'll bring my laptop with the exam generator on it.

In case you haven't already found it, here's a linky to the exam generator.

You'll notice right away, when you begin running through the exams, that it's structured for all ages - there is no age restriction to obtain an Amateur Radio License - from kids in Junior High school to us old farts; we all write the same exam. (that's a confidence boost to those who may have exam anxiety...(grin))

Hey all, it starts right away! This Wednesday to be exact. The January course may be the best bet, but as he said, if you want to do it sooner than later, show up and there could be room. Definitely worth a try.

Here is the reply I received:

"We are getting very close to the 25 people mark and any more might be to many.

The course goes for 12 weeks. The first night (September 16th) is a
registration and general questions night. What might be best is if they
are still interested to either wait for the class starting in January or
if there is less then 25 people, show up Wednesday I can let you know and
they can come out the next week.

The class starts this Wednesday September
16th in room 207 at DeVry."

I have started the generator and got 51% then 58%

that's without looking in the notes so some stuff (like, what length should be for this frequency) I just took a guess.

I'm sure I can get consistently over 70 or 80 after only a few days of doing it

You kicked my ass on your inaugural score. I believe I scored a very proud 36%.(Grin)

You'll notice that there are a lot of questions pertaining to just regulations. Those are easy to remember. The more technical questions may require some word association just to memorize the answers.

You're off to a great start.
