Because of the design on the front bilsteins is there not a potential for failure?

It appears that the coilover is only supported by a collar which is secured by a number of set screws. So in essence the entire weight of the compressed spring is resting on a number of set screws around a groove on the shocks....? Is this right.... And if they were to come loose or take a pounding they could slip causing the coil to slip. This would then eventually be seen by scratches on the shock as the collar and set screws slip downward.

I am looking at installing a Toyotec Ultimate 3" lift on my truck with the tires and rims to complete the package. However, I am having conflicts with the information local shops are telling me.

Has anyone had any problems or seen failure with this setup?

I have once but not on a Toyota. I had a bilstein/eibach set up on one of my vehicles in th past and the collar slipped off somewhere leaving the rear drivers with no suspension. I haven't heard anything similar in the Toyota side though.

It's possible you may not have an issue with this set up.

For 5000 including tires rims and install i just want to make sure i have a top notched lift. 1700 for the kit (in Calgary) it better not fail.

Any other input?

I had no issues with mine while it was installed - the lca broke before the shock body when I totalled it! Shock body should push right out and I have thenpieces to put back on new 5100's. * enter shameless plug that my kit is for sale...*

I wouldn't hesitate doing it again, it's the exact same as a strut assembly except the collar toytec provides is threaded - the strut us just a single platform/perch pressed onto the shock body (correct me if I am wrong...).

The issues you're worried about are the exact same issues that made me decide against this setup. When I am off-roading, I run my FJ pretty hard and after reading enough stories about the bilsteins failing under extreme circumstances, I changed my mind. One less thing to worry about in my opinion.

Care to post any threads relating to the failure of the bilsteins?
