This is for us peeps that own the 1996-2002 3rd Gen 4Runners with Automatic transmissions.

Browsing on T4R.org there was an issue with the Radiator that was brought to my attention. Mind you these are fairly rare instances that happen on these trucks (haven't seen this problem at work). However, if it does occur it WILL lead to powertrain failure if it's not caught early enough and the only tell tale signs are when the transmission begins to fail.

So what's the issue? The transmission cooler which is integral to the radiator sometimes will leak internally therefore mixing Automatic transmission fluid with engine coolant or vice versa. Should the coolant mix with the transmission fluid, it will destroy the fiber linings of the clutch packs in the transmission, swelling seals, etc...

What's the fix? Installing an aftermarket transmission cooler, you need to do this anyways if your truck has lots of heavy accessories like bumper, skids, winch, bigger tires etc... When the aftermarket cooler installed, you want to bypass the OEM cooler COMPLETELY.
