So I'm considering an engine swap, just wondering if anyone has come across this occurrence or knows where I can get some information on the following:

Current setup

04 Tacoma with 3.4L V6

Acquired this engine today:

1HD-FTE 4.2-litre six-cylinder 24-valve turbodiesel EFI engine out of a 2003 Series 79 Land Cruiser

First off does anyone know if it'll even fit in my tacoma?

Appreciate any info/feedback.

I have no idea ... but that is gnarly. I wonder if John (canadian bum is our resident diesel head) has any info on that.

yup I'll be stoked if it's possible, how can you turn down a free land cruiser engine, it's just not possible.........

Gotta love a workplace that wrecks the land cruiser but is wise enough to keep the engine for the in house engineer to steal :)

Could you get an engine for me too? It might be a little long and you might have to cut out your IFS to clear the engine. So SAS and diesel would be sweet. You can build anything it just takes time.

Can you get a measurement of your engine bay? I know complete drivetrain on a 1HD-T with automatic and t case from crank pulley to rear trans output is 76 inches. Not to mention the t case is offset to one side so you would either have to swap rear diffs or swap tcases? Is it manual or auto?

maybe these guys would have an answer.

one way to start would be find out what transmission was in the LC

Better make sure the engine fits in there. The straight 6 isn't exactly as short as the pics provided by freeze. Both of those fit good but look like 4 cylinders.

Thanks for the info guys,

The LC had a standard tranny like the tacoma, but tomorrow at work I have a 2010 LC in the shop I'm going to measure that engine bay and engine...they haven't changed much style wise, then I'll compare it to the Taco.

I'll let you know what I come up with.

And additional diesel engines for sale might be do-able, supposedly we have 8 more engines somewhere I'll do some digging and find out.....mind you I've since moved from Fort Mac to Sudbury ON, so keep that in mind for shipping costs and such. (but for the right price and a milkshake I can be bribed to drive it out :) )

The easiest Turbo diesel swap for the Tacoma and 4Runner ('96 - '04) is the 1KZ-TE engine. It was an optional engine for the Hilux in overseas markets which has the same platform as our trucks, so it bolts right up to all the motor and tranny mounts, etc. Only issue is with wiring, so if you ever get one of these puppies in the shop there, please let me know. :)
