View Full Version : Waiparous - End of January?

Sprockett

Anyone interested in a one day winter trip to the Waiparous area at the end of the month? Unfortunately, I do not know the area at all so a trail guide is needed.

My truck needs to get out somewhere after all this work. If there are more who are interested and someone (a couple) who knows the area, I can turn this into a more 'official' unofficial run thread :)

Thanks,
Ryan

Sweet, this could be looking up.

In order to happen, we do need someone who who knows the area so it would be great if you could make it Harry. Anyone who can confirm their attendance, be clear and I'll add your name to the first post.

A fellow named Peter with a SASed 92 pickup looks to be interested. I believe you know him from Calgary Nissan club Harry? Anyways, he's been to Waiparous recently and I found him on the Beyond forums. Maybe he'll make an appearance on this thread too :)

Mark me down as a Def Maybe ;)

I'm in for a nice mellow run - shake out a few bugs and make sure I remember how to wheel.

Petes been with us for years and years. There's a few of us here from CN4XC - now known as Calgary Import 4WD club. A great guy to have on trail with you.

Put me down as a tentative.

That's great. Just found out Peter has confirmed that he's in for this run. Looking forward to meeting him and the others here I haven't met.

Yes, also looking for mellow shake down run. I'm bringing the whole family too!

I'd like to come, but have a question about my tires:

So, you mentioned MT or AT tires - my Hakkapeliittas (winter, studded) are M&S rated, with the snowflake symbol. They are not really any AT or MT. Any thoughts how they'd work on a winter trail? If at all?

Geoff

Traction aside, I would not take a tire like that offroad because they are not constructed to with durabilty or puncture resistance off pavement in mind?

Dante's Taco
01-20-2010, 11:43 PM
they're LT rated, 10-ply, if that matters...

LT rating and 10 ply sounds like offroad consideration to me.

Well, I'd like to tag along if that'd be cool? - I'll prob. bring some of my family too. (son +/- daughter). Have done Intro course & been to Waiparous this past summer.

Trucks still pretty stock though. If you don't think it'd work out, I'm OK with you saying so..

If you have the Hakkapeliitta LT you shouldn't do to bad ... the voids look large enough to clear some of the snow. The Hakkapeliitta 5 SUV and the SUV look as though they might turn into slicks after getting filled with deep snow.

Of course, there is only one way to find out! (There will be at least one person with a winch :D )

Some food for thought for ya! A couple of fella's over on the former cn4xc site winter wheel with their dedicated winter tires. Haven't heard of any complaints from them.

You will be just fine with those tires offroad. I worked with a guy last winter who had them on his Chev and we drove up and down freshly cleared pipeline corridors all day. Stumps and branches and rocks were no match for the LT's.

Ok looks like i'm in for sure. Just need to give truck a once over - make sure everything is good to go..

Where are we meeting in Cochrane? Or are we meeting at a certain time/place in Waip - eg gravel pits - I will need to unload my trailer and store it there for the run.

I wouldn't mind grabbing a bite & some gas in Cochrane, after the drive down from Red Deer...

Re: CalgaryRider: Not sure if will have much room for extra if 2 of my kids, plus dog (big lab) come, sorry..

CalgaryRider
01-25-2010, 01:41 PM
no worries, just seeing if someone had any room. If not she can always catch a ride at a later date or I will have to take her in the spring and hopefully find some snow along the way.

My personal preference would be to meet in :):):):)rane somewhere. Smitty's in Cochrane is still closed for renos however. Anyone else have a meeting place to suggest in Cochrane?

Does that mean you are in for sure Doc?

No passenger room here either, sorry. Bringing the wife and kids this time.

Thanks,

Or if people want a quick bite to eat on the way out there is a Mcdonalds on 5th ave. I'm just wanting to know if people are wanting a sit down breaky or just want to get on the road early.. Need to know when to leave my place.

Tim Hortons is the usual meeting place but as with all Tims it's super busy in the AM. I will have room but I've scared the daylights out of many of my passengers. The photo of me in Indian Graves nearly on my side was with a buddies daughter on board (she held on to the roof and walls very well).

Sprockett
01-25-2010, 08:45 PM
Does this mean you are in confirmed Harry? :D

How about we say Tim Hortons as the meeting place Saturday morning. Some may want a sit down, others just meet to go. We can just decide on a time to head out by and those who want a sit down breakfast can come early enough to do so?

I don't think I'll sit down to eat with the kids personally but still hope to be there a little early. When do we want to ship out by? 8:30am?

Dante's Taco
01-25-2010, 10:09 PM
Timmys is fine by me, and so is 08:30

So, it doesn't look like I'll have an air compressor by Sat. I was trying to get a cheap MV-50 from Amazon.com, but Amazon wont ship it to Canada  - or any air compressor, for some reason. Now looking at Viair stuff, but way more $.

Out of the guys coming, does someone have "enuf puff" to spare? I don't really see anything good (local) here in the Deer - so I'm going to have to order online I guess. I don't want the Canada Tire 3-in-1 thing. If I'm missing a good local store to find a MV-50 clone, let me know...

thanks

I can send my tried and true but slow CDN tire compressor with David W. as back up. :D

Do pack super warm clothes and blankets and fire making goods. The sun has baked the south facing slopes so expect sheer ice or sun crust with major facets underneith on those slopes. Perhaps faceting or Wind crust on the north facing slopes. Keep in mind coming back can be harder than going out. Make sure winches are top notch shape...may have to even winch downhill if it's deep facets.

Really wish I could make it out for this one.

Have a great trip!

Hey Harry, yeah could I send you a passenger? Her name is Julie and she is the one who is helping me get parts right now, and she loves winter wheeling. Can I get her to meet you at Timmy's in Cochrane on Sat morning? She is a girl who doesn't scare easy so she should be a good passenger for you!

I agree with Nathan..

The hills will def be slick..!! I was out there a couple weeks ago on my quad - and some of the hills were skating rinks.

Which makes it really interesting when your trying to pull a dead Polaris 850 up them...

We can check some of the winter trails when we get out there - if they are too slick we may just choose some other flatter ones for everyone. LOL

I don't have a chainsaw, shoulda got in on that group buy :(

That's too bad Harry, hopefully there will be another opportunity this winter. Looks like Doc McCoy is now confirmed so we'll still be 6 trucks this run.

So, the run still does not have an official 'leader' and although I started the thread, I do not know the area. I actually don't mind breaking trail if no one else wants the job but someone else will have to actually decide where we are going :D

Thanks,
Ryan

After much consideration I would like to join in on the run. I'm running dedicated snow tires with studds and it may help in the ice. By the sounds of it it looks like its going to be an easy going run and I convinced 874runnersr5 to join up. So I hope its cool with you guys and Shane, me or Antonio can take on a passenger.
