Hey all,

After last months official trail ride to the Waiparous Falls I started having a squeal come from the engine compartment. Over the two weeks before going on vacation the sound only got worse. I thought it might be the power steering pump pulley but kept hearing from everyone that it was a belt slipping and to just use belt dressing on it. Tried that. Nope.

After I got back from vacation, it was time to replace the belts. After figuring out the system it was pretty easy. However, ran into a bit of a problem when I tried to tighten the belts. If the ac belt was loose, I would get a slipping belt sound. If I got the belt nice and tight the squeal actually got far worse. Checking the idler pulley I almost burnt myself. That's when I realized the idler pulley bearings were shot.

The bearing does not looked to be sealed so this might be an ongoing problem for us puddle jumpers. As it stands now, I've lost my AC. http://illiweb.com/fa/i/smiles/icon_sad.gif

sounds like the you found the Toyota Surprise like I did. I think they must be some what sealed but obviously not too well. Does yours have a bearing number?

haha... I too am starting to get the whine flu. The second half of McLean we hit a deep pond. Toyota needs a better idle pulley bearing.

LOL... Well I got a quote for a replacement. 253 bucks. 360 something installed. Didn't get a part number sadly.

On the plus side, I went into NAPA and got a replacement pulley with a sealed bearing for just over fifty. I'll be posting a write up in the cheap mods section as soon as I get around to it.

more like HSR1(another good one)

The TTORA post is pretty well saying the same thing, they cant find a bearing number either. Toyota parts has a part number for the whole idler pulley not just a bearing. It would be easier if there was a number.

I will have to get a use of a micrometer and press the bearing out so I can take measurements of the outer race and try to match a bearing that way.

Damn, do you 4L kids have serpentine belts? After reading the ttora post it looks like it. Completely different system from mine then.

I'll get a pick of my old blown bearing pulley and the new NAPA pulley side by side. It might be worth while to get an aftermarket one. Better design and even if it isn't it is a lot cheaper to replace.

I replaced my idler pulley a few years ago and it was really easy to do. Dive in and give it a shot. I used an aftermarket pulley from Autozone or somewhere and it's lasted me 4-5 years of pretty harsh offroad use.

Well ... it's been replaced. AC is working, there is no squealing and the engine is runnin' smooth as silk.

Here is the comparison shot of the two different pulleys.

If you can't tell ... the new pulley on top is the sealed NAPA pulley.

The pulley on the bottom that has the blown bearing ... stock part.

NAPA = 50 bucks
Toyota = 250 bucks.
