So I am a little confused with this one... I wired on the harness but cutting the old wires one by one and matching them to the new harness for my lovely second hand Sony deck. Thinking I had done the job right I put everything back in place, and fired up the car. Everything worked!

Then I was driving while it was getting dark out... not being able to see your speed on the highway is a little odd!

In any case, just wondering if we have any resident auto electricians who would like to offer up their advice in finding the cause. The car is currently in my half heated garage (go space heater!) and torn apart for easy access!

Thanks in advance!

Check your fuses, you may have connected two different wires that may look the same as not all colors look the same for the manufactor.

Sounds like your illuminator wire may be crossed to a ground, so as stated above, may not be connected properly. I've never installed a sony deck, but when I put my pioneer in my 99 civic is was colour for colour, very easy to do, but theres always a couple left over you don't use if you aren't running a sub and amp. So yeah, check fuses and double check wiring.

You do have soemthings messed up. Do you have a door chime when your key is in the ignition?? How about a dome light?? you will need to check your fuses. ALL OF THEM they tie into some odd stuff so looking at the panel diagram will not necesarilly point you in the right direction.

Here is a wiring diagram for your vehicle, make sure your connections are as follows.

If you get stuck let me know and I can help.

Going to check all the fuses (the one for illumination was good at first check) I have dome lights and front seat overhead lights - not the ashtray light though.

Going to be double checking the wiring as I must have screwed something up. Oh well, at least it's easy to take apart!

Well, after tinker on the car this afternoon I have come up snake-eyes. Still no dash lights...

I have checked fuses, my wiring (as per these directions (http://www.installdr.com/InstallDocs/Honda/PDF/466005.pdf)) and I still got nothin'.

Chimes work (as in when I insert the key it makes it's regular beeping noise) along with the deck noise (if I leave the faceplate on) along with the cabin lights (not the ash tray light though - located front and center below the head unit).

If anyone would like to assist in solving this gremlin I would certainly appreciate it!

City Rider,if you need a factory deck, I have one in a box, not sure if it's tape or CD, but it came out of my wifes civic, it may help determine if it's a wiring issue or something further, you can just have it, if needed.

let me know.

It sounds like something went wrong with the dimmer light...

Thanks for the offer - I've got the stock deck kicking around I could mess with if I need too... With a 'plug and play' wiring harness (only requiring me to match the colours) one would figure it to be straight forward.

Tis frustrating but luckily I have the black beast to drive most of the time in the winter!

Sure makes me wonder...

Fuses - Check
Wiring - Check (looks to be right...)
Grounded - Check
Everything else works.... check?

I think I may do that - just for :):):):)s and giggles as it's already torn apart on the inside... With my luck it will work with no issues!

And my little space heater is doing just fine keeping it above freezing! Just means I have to wear a sweater, toque and gloves...

haha gotcha, you never know it could be the deck thats giving you these problems.

Ya, it could be... but it has worked on an Echo before without fail.

After reading, perhaps it's the dimmer switch (as you noted) so I am gonna check that out as well.
