View Full Version : Another broken 8"

Well, I was almost settling down and got rid of my paranoia because it's been a year since I last broke a diff and this was supposed to be a special diff because it was heat treated and set up professionally (i.e. by someone other than myself). Oh well, I promised myself that if this thing doesn't last I'll be getting the 9.5" Toyota diff.

So, I guess I'm writing this for two reasons:
1. For all of you who are running the Toyota 8" rear, listen to what everyone else is saying. They are good stock, and might handle 33's and even 35's, but as soon as you start adding crawl boxes and such, forget it. The 8.4" diff is a bit stronger and the ARB diff is supposedly even stronger than the stock Toyota diff in both 8" and 8.4". And, the 9.5" FJ80 is of course the mother of all Toyota rear ends.

2. Being a die-hard Toyota fan I am no where's near bastardizing my baby with a dana axle, ford 9" or chevy stuff, but I also realize that keeping her pure, will cost a bit of money. So, if anyone knows of a '93-'97 Landcruiser rearend, please let me know. I've got some other technical stuff to figure out as well, and I'm sure the good folks at I8mud and pirate can help me, but it looks as if the truck will be down for a few months. Not good! First time in years! Hopefully I'll have her up and running for some snow wheeling before it's gone.

I'll ask what BigMike is running in his rear end cause he daily drives his on 37's, 3 crawl boxes, 2.7 supercharged. All I know at the moment is he runs cromo axles, 5.29, and an ARB. I've gotta call him anyways this week.

It may come down to what you're using for gears/bearing/set up. I'll see if Mike's had issues with his set up. If he hasn't, he's run that set up for about 4-5 years on a Toy 8".

Hey Gary.. If you need any "technical" info let me know. Remember I put an FJ80 rear in my rig already.

Good luck finding one though - I drove out to BC to get mine. At that time I could only find 2 in all of Canada. LOL

Much much beefier 3rd member.

Biggest issue is the damn ebrake on them - but knowing you you'll prob keep it linked so you might not have the issues I did. I just finished putting in a line loc for an E-brake.

And it's very nice having discs all the way around - I upgraded to the FJ80 Master Cyl - and then you need to re-route some lines but its not too bad.

I have heard the Elocked version has a week spot on the splined axle shaft - so if you go that route def get the upgraded shafts. If you don't go Elocker I think your only other choice is ARB - I went with Lincoln

Come over one weekend and we can have a few beers to discuss it. ;)

Thanks Scott. I will have to take you up on this offer because I need to come and have a look at a few things. Thanks

Hey Gary.... how about going with a Tundra 10"? That might just fall into the unbreakable category!

... But then you would need to run 42s to make the pumpkin less of a boat anchor or rock anchor.

If he goes with the 9.5 FJ80 he'll be fine. The thing is super beefy compared to the Normal 8". I have some pics on my other computer I can post up when I get home later this week - that show a comparison of an Standard 8", FJ80 Front and an FJ80 rear.

As well Gary you might want to get the Ring/pinion treated by Marlin. I sent him down mine and he put his magically treatment on them both - wasnt much to get it done - think I spent more on shipping. I know Dean from Folk Auto sends all his gearing out to a local guy to get it treated too - He puts stupid power through his gears and they hold up well.

Any luck finding an axle yet?

I had Marlin do the same with my 8" V6 rear and HP 8" front. So far so good but I'm not turning 37's either though.

Is that similar to Cryo?

Nope, still looking Scott, but there are plenty in the US, so just trying to find the best one for the lowest price right now.

Yeah, the 10" would be cool Nathan, but you would have to put an aftermarket locker in that thing, and I'm pro E-locker, so that's what I'm going for.

Yeah for sure.. I don't even think ARB makes a locker for the 10" yet. Did the ones in the states get 10" e-lockers? I've seen a few TRD Off-Road Tundra's from the States.

Did you find one yet?

Yep, I found one out of Colorado. :) Will be picking it up at Montana Shipping Outlet next week. If someone else has anything coming in for pick-up, please let me know and I can grab it for ya.

Thanks Scott

Yeah, it's on a pallet and they can load it with a fork lift onto the flatbed, but I bet it's going to be a bit more tricky to get it off.

Hey Gary. With your new 80 rear axle, are you upgrading your axle nuts to 10mm from the standard 8mm? I was just thinking sheering those would be a bummer on the trail.

Nathan, I'm getting the chromoly Longfield flanges which comes with the extra dowels, but not sure if the studs are thicker too: http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/products/4340-CHROMOLY-TOYOTA-DRIVE-FLANGES-.html

Hey Gary - I know for the front you can't use the extra dowels with that Kit - Just the upgraded drive flange and studs.

Hey Scott, yeah, so far my front hubs have held up great fot 5 years so I wasn't really considering an upgrade there at this time. You got the bigger upgrades for your fronts, right? Did you upgrade the rears as well?

Brian from Diamond axle who is making my axle shafts, suggested the longfield flanges for my rears.

Yep, I should be ready on my end, but I am still waiting for my axle shafts from Brian. If I can get them on time, I'll be ready to rock.

I have been doing that a lot lately unfortunately. I have enough close friends with trucks and I know how capable they are. Who knows I might change my mind for Easter long hard to say still a little early. Already got the trail in mind though.
