I just went & started the truck and this loud, horrible ticking sound immediately started coming from the passenger footwell area.
I narrowed it down & disconnected a plug to see if it was the culprit.
It was,
I shut the truck offf right away. I took some photos,

You probably have some dirt in the fan. Leafs, pine needles, perhaps gravel. Check if the ticking speed change with fan speed. If it was me, I would just turn the fan to max and try and blast it out of there.

I have the same... pretty sure it's a leaf or something similar. Haven't had the time to investigate any further.

It's just that the ticking/clicking is so loud.
I'm gonna investigate further once I have more time.
In the mean time I've pulled out my summer ride for the day.

I would unplug the blower motor (thats what the large round black thing is) and remove the three screws then lower it out and clean out the debris. Before re istalling the blower motor reach inside the housing and clean it out too. I do this alot on GM stuff and from the first photo I'd say it's the same type of motor as even the screws look similar (7/32). Does anyone know if Toyota trucks have pollen filters cause you might want to replace them as well.

Those fans in the second gen taco's have a bad tendency to get out of balance. The fan knocks off a metal plate at the base, creating a loud ticking noise. I've adjusted mine several times and it only seems to last for a few months. There are three adjustment screws you have to toy with to get it back in balance.
Or it could be a leaf, etc. Pull out the fan, it drops straight down, and take out the filter and vacuum out the ducting. Make sure it's all clean.
Hope this helps.

These trucks DO have pollen filters, one good tip for you DIYers if you're changing your own pollen filters make sure any leaves that pile on top don't get shoved underneath after you stick the new filter in because that will cause some ticking.

^ That'd be it. I have the same thing. Annoying as all hell.

All the new taco's have dust/pollen filters and are scheduled for change every 46,ooo kms... But that under normal driving conditions not off road conditions

The 05's didn't come with dust/pollen filters. But the 06+ do. Kind of strange.

I took out my cabin filter, it was pretty disgusting. It only has 18000km & all city & highway driving, no offroad yet.
Not too many leaves, but some, none that went down into the fan itself.
Anyways the clicking/ticking doesn't change at all with fan speed or with the a/c on or not. The sound is coming from the left side of the passenger footwell, to the left of fan.
I circled the area in the photos in my 1st post.

Interesting... my clicking does change with fan speed and disappears when the fan is off. I'm assuming mine is a leaf or something... unlike your issue.

Had the taco @ c.H. toyota for Chris to do the alignment and look at the clicking.
It was the blend door actuator/servo module, under warranty.
part on order.
thanks Chris!

Good thing it was under warranty; I've heard from posts on TN that the fix is pretty labour intensive (pretty much have to take the whole dash apart). Apparently the adhesive on the foam strips on some years of the 2nd gen tacos blend door is defective & comes loose
Chris, is that correct?

the part is about $285 & 4.5-5 hours labour.:o
warranty is a good thing

LR uca's, eibach springs & front 5100's installed,
all-pro front bumper installed,
still need to tweak a few things.
still need to paint & install the rear bumper though

Resurrecting old thread.
Interesting thing happened to me. Blower motor just QUIT. Dead. Nada. No air movement. Lights on HVAC panel all fine, the bright lights come on when you push the A/C or cabin re-circ buttons, but nothing really is happening, b/c no air is moving. Yes, I change my pollen filter like ever 6 months. Remember, I'm the guy who only pays $3.50 a filter. ;) so no, don't even bother with those comments.
Obviously, fan is dead. so why?
Thanks to one of the Good Doctors on here, got some advice on things to check:
pulled IG1 10A No2 fuse (behind coin tray) - looks fine, but we all know that can get you burned just looking with your eye, so tested with continuity on multimeter - it's fine.
OK, on to next one:
50 A Heater fuse in fuse box in engine bay - same as above - checks out ok
OK, on to next: heater relay - nope - it's switching fine.
I'm next thinking, OK, a few months back we pulled the HVAC console to pull power to my lighted 4WD selector switch mod - maybe one of the plugs came loose?? worth a shot (unlikely, since they CLIP in, but hey...). Nope all plugs in solid. pulled on each wire with needle-nose pliers to be sure. nothing. everythings tight.
Put HVAC console back in. Now on to motor power plug itself - did it get somehow disconnected? Nope. And this isn't the famous heater resistor issue, as that is all or nothing with fan speed, not just DEAD, as I under stand it.
So get this. while sitting there staring at my truck going WTF?? - all of a sudden the fan comes to life. hair on back of neck prickles up.
But the fan is TICKING / clicking like a SOB. And barely spinning. I read on another forum to try giving the fan (lower part) a whack with a rubber mallet & see if ticking goes away / or even starts in cases like this.
YES, and the fan speed went up dramatically.
So - what is going on here? is my fan on it's way out? Darryl - I know about the three screws people adjust on these blower motors to get rid of a "ticking" - but I didn't think that explains complete intermittent failure of the blower... I mean I didn't have ticking, I had silence cause there was NO fan...
If it is on it's way out - this shouldn't be to0 bad a DIY job to just swap in a new blower motor, right? I got a quote from the states for $104
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=214074&chapter=§ionids=0,51825&groupid=51827&subgroupid=3810&make=34&model=Tacoma&year=2006&catalogid=2&displayCatalogid=0
Thoughts welcome, good doctors...
:D
EDIT: And I blame you James - a pox on your house.. this happened like the day after you added that quote to your sig. Evil is afoot I say Evil.... <jk>

Geoff
You might have a blower motor with worn out commutator brushs or a large dried leaf stuck in the fan or maybe both.

Thanks. Is it worth trying to repair the brushes myself? I've never done that except on RC model car motors LOL.
I pulled out complete cabin air filter assy so I could have a look at the cage fan - looks pretty clean down there, other than the usual very fine film of dust.
No dead critters / leaves / other foreign objects.
Guess what my Friends at Red Deer Toyota want for the part? $ 169.50 :D:D Oh and they don't have it in stock anyway.
Sounds like a little cross border shopping is gonna happen
Fan is working great again, no ticking after I gave it a good solid whack with the rubber hammer. But, I will replace this pretty quick, as no A/C with summer coming is one thing - can always roll down windows. But no defrost could be downright dangerous.
EDIT: actually, I see Newman Toyota is gonna charge me $35 shipping, and that's before duty / GST etc. So it might be cheaper or damn close to same locally, if I can find a dealer who gives CT4WD members a 15% break (Red Deer claims never heard of us)
Who are the dealers again that offer 15% off:
- Heninger
- Cochrane
Did I miss one?

That'd be great.. except Amazon.com DOESN'T sell to Canadians....
"This item cannot be shipped to the address you selected. (Learn more.) You may either change the shipping address or remove the item by clicking Delete."
And although I'm headed down to Montana on Tuesday, not sure it will make it there in time...

Ah what the hell. I ordered it. Price is $39.00 - it's made by TYC - same company as all those cabin air filters I posted about.
for an extra $20 I get 1 day shipping - so it *might* make it to Sweetgrass by the time Addy & I get there. (finger's crossed)
Wouldn't that be sweet.
Could swap it out in the parking lot & never pay a cent in duty ;)
